Kos Island International Airport Hippocrates (KGS)
A relatively large, two-terminal facility, Kos Ippokratis Airport (KGS) is the only air gateway into and out of the popular summer holiday destination of Kos. The airport is located around 26 km / 16 miles to the south-west of Kos Town and next to the Antimachia area, Christos and Panagia.
Flights to and from mainland Greece operate daily, while charter flights run to a wide variety of destinations during the sunny summer months. At this busy time of the year, Kos Airport becomes the sixth busiest in the whole of Greece.
Public buses operated by KTEL run from outside of the airport into Kos Town and other popular destinations and resorts on the island, such as Marmari (north-east), Mastihari (north), Pyli (north-east) and Tigaki (north-east). Taxis are also onsite at Kos Ippokratis Airport and provide an inexpensive way to reach the nearby southerly resort of Kardamena, which is particularly popular with young holidaymakers and known for its extensive selection of bars and lively nightspots.
About Kos Tourism
A popular holiday destination, Kos is a Greek 'Dodecanese' island that has experienced a rapid growth in tourism over the last few decades. Visitors will find well-developed resorts set on scenic beaches, complete with all modern amenities.
The island of Kos is rich in history famed for its whitewashed buildings and there are many sites of historical interest worthy of a mention. Dating back to the 15th century, the Castle of the Knights of St. John is a must-see. The Archaeological Museum in Kos Town is also of interest, with its fine collection of ancient artefacts including pieces from the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras. While tourism has diluted the local Greek culture in the popular resort areas, visitors flying into Kos Ippokratis Airport (KGS) can travel to more obscure areas of the island and still capture the essence of local Greek life.
